For Texas Independence Day

180 years ago today the citizens of Texas officially adopted the Texas Declaration of Independence and severed ties with Mexico.

Happy Texas Independence Day.

The men that laid the foundation for our home did so with the knowledge their brothers in arms were under siege and likely would not prevail against the full force of the tyrant Santa Anna’s army. The impossible decision to condemn 189 men to death in the Alamo was made with the knowledge their sacrifice gave life to the dream that was Texas.

In the same vein as the nation they would join nine years later, Texans showed in blood their will to freely determine their own destiny. As General Houston remembered the loss of Colonel Fannin and his troops in Goliad, and the sacrifice of Colonel Travis and the men of the Alamo, while he brought the Napoleon of the West to his knees, so too must we remember.

Remember Goliad. Remember the Alamo. And again, celebrate Texas Independence Day.
